Man, mezcal is getting popular in the United States. Last week I gave a talk to the California Academy of Sciences titled “Why Mezcal, Why Now?” The number of additions to our Where to Drink Mezcal in the United States list and map is another way of answering that question. We’ve added quite a few locations in recent weeks including
- Butchertown Hall in Nashville
- La Loba Cantina in Brooklyn
- Las Flores in Chicago
- Port Fonda in Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri
- Painted Burro in Sumerville, Massachusetts
- Whisler’s in Austin
- Matador in Seattle
- Lone Star Taco Bar in Cambridge
- Tequila Mockingbird in New Canaan
We want to continue on our campaign to ensure that no one is far from a great place to drink mezcal so definitely send us your recommendations. We’re going to be traveling much more over the next few months as we prepare for Mezcal: Mexico in a Bottle to New York June 5-6 and Chicago September 18th so we’ll also be visiting quite a few more drinking establishments.
While we’re at it, we updated our Where to Drink Mezcal in Oaxaca list and map including the addition of newcomer El Destilado, updated notes on Cuish’s tasting room, and a few more things. ex

Do the old bottles of mescal have any value? I have a bottle of Gusano Rojo from about 1980. The bottles originally were numbered such as the one I have.
Max Garrone says
Hi there, it really depends on demand but there aren’t really well developed markets for them so sales take some legwork.
