Background Notes
San Luis Del Rio is full of small producers of mostly espadin based mezcal, tucked away in the hills of the Tlacolula region of Oaxaca. The methods and flavors that come from this region are a time capsule of culture. The Mendez family is one of the larger mezcal producing families in the region. Master Mezcalero Rafael Mendez and the Mendez family have been producing mezcal exclusively for Casa Cortes since 2017. After his recent passing his two sons, Francisco and Ivan Mendez, rose to the continued production at the palenque in San Luis Del Rio.
