Nose
The aroma is full of rich roasted agave with a bit of sweet bubble gum lurking in the background.
Flavor
The Mezcal Nacional Ensemble starts as a very lean mezcal and then opens into a mid palate fruitiness surrounded by a herbal halo. It’s an oscillating mezcal which allows all its contrasts to blend, fly apart, and rejoin again. Kind of like Voltron.
Background
The illustrations on all the Mezcal Nacional labels point to critical junctures in Mexican history. The oil derrick on the ensemble’s label is a reference to 1938 when Mexico nationalized oil production. “Nationalization, however, came at a heavy price as it precipitated an international boycott of Mexico. The boycott caused great economic strain to a country already in the midst of a worldwide economic depression. Mezcal Nacional 1938 seeks to recognize the sacrifice and resolve of the Mexican people through the careful preparation of a superb ensamble.”
