Nose
Coffee and smoked meats make this aromatically well suited to be a breakfast or brunch mezcal!
Taste
The flavors begin savory, with cracked pepper and notes of smoked meat. There is considerable spice and astringency, with flavors of cranberry and red currants delivering puckery acidity that is well balanced by gentle smoke. Lemon zest and creamy clay notes make for a delicate and flavorful finish.
Method/Background
The making of Minero is a family effort. Luis Carlos and son Luis Carlos Martinez make Minero, following in the tradition of Luis’ father Don Lencho or Florencio Carlos Sarmiento. After the passing of Don Lencho, his daughters, Elvira Carlos and Plácida Carlos occasionally make Minero as well. In general, this artisanal mezcal is made by cooking agaves in an in-ground pit, crushed, fermented in wooden vats and double distilled in small clay ‘Filipino’ style stills. Previously batches of Minero had an ABV of 49% but now you find batches at 50%.
