Background Notes
Darian Martyniuk runs a travel service that has some stops in Mexico but is now also importing these amazing bottles of uncertified mezcal from San Luis Potosi. The two currently on offer are very distinct expressions of salmiana and distilling techniques. The Peñasco sings with the lactic notes common in Mexico’s north but the clay pot still distillation contributes flavors of its own while integrating all the flavors in an amazingly unique and subtle experience.
The expressions are named for the village or municipality in which the spirits are produced. He named his micro-brand after the Matachin which is a ceremonial dancer with its own set of cultures. Martyniuk says that a friend suggested the name because it “represents a unique element of the local culture that is not widely known, and that jells with part of my mission with this brand – to bring less known yet really unique and amazing spirits to the broader world.”
Martyniuk is planning on importing additional local expressions so look out for those in the near future.
