Wahaka
Wahaka, the phonetic spelling of Oaxaca and still a great pronunciation guide, is the fruit of five partners, one of whom is the maestro mezcalero Alberto Morales.
They produce two lines of mezcals, the regular line hovers around 42% ABV and covers a variety of classic flavors within the Artisanal classification for NOM 70. The limited edition line is all classified as Ancestral and is the fruit of Alberto Morales’ experiments with limited harvests, unique pechugas, and whatever else interests him.
Wahaka has a commitment to agave reforestation and the community of San Dionisio Ocotepec where the mezcal is produced. Its Fundación Agaves Silvestres replants wild agave and educates the community and its youth on responsible farming. They also support programs for free quality healthcare, delivering toys to impoverished kids, and sponsoring decent uniforms to the high school basketball team. And they pay above market wages so workers and their families can thrive.
