Agave marmorata
This species is characterized by a massive agave that can take decades to mature in the wild. It is highly prized for a distinctly earthy flavor. It is med to large in size and emerald green to blue green in color with distinctly wavy pencas, though few pencas for it’s relatively large size. It has a rich yellow flowered quiote and takes anywhere from 12-25 years to mature. It reproduces by seed.
Common varieties in the species include tepextate (tepeztate, tepestate), tdu-cual (zapoteco), pitzometl (náhuatl), maguey de caballo, curandero, becuela, cuela, pichomel.
It is found in Oaxaca, Estado de Mexico, Jalisco, Morelos, Puebla, Michoacan, Jalisco, Veracruz
