Taste
The Mal de Amor madrecuishe is a mezcal with everything you’d expect from Matatlán: Measured roast agave, sparkling alcohol, and a round body. The code word here is equilibrium because there is so little smoke but an abundance of the classic roasted agave sweetness. This is very direct, frontal core, stuff with some incredibly fun aromas.
Background Notes
Mal de Amor is a project by the Hernández brothers who emigrated but came back to create this brand which features an extensive line of mezcals and the full palenque experience. This is their family brand, they also produce for Ilegal Mezcal. They offer tours but they also have a restaurant helmed by Gaudencio Ruiz who is another immigration boomerang story. Ruiz cooked in LA at a number of notable restaurants like Nobu before returning to his home to offer the full palenque experience.
