The Books
Books always make for great gifts and 2023 was a banner year for books. Agave focused, cocktail focused, food focused, so many great offerings after the quiet years of the pandemic.
- Agave Spirits: Past, Present and Future of Mezcals by Gary Nabhan and David Suro
- A Field Guide to Tequila by Clayton Szczech
- The Essential Tequila and Mezcal Companion by Tess Rose Lampert
- Asada plus Occo Spice by Bricia Lopez
- The Bartender’s Manifesto by Toby Malone and Emma Janzen
The Copitas
We have said this before and we will say it again, there is no such thing as too many copitas. We can never get enough of the beautiful Tuyo porcelain copitas and drinkware, the unique ceramic copitas from Mexico by Hand and our new copita obsession from Mercaderia Shop who was at our Phoenix event this year (also be sure to check out their woven linens!)
The Perfect Pairings
We have been having a lot of fun recently putting together various mezcal pairings. Here are some great gift ideas for things that pair especially well with mezcal.
- If you were at our San Diego event this year you probably tasted 1933 Simple Syrup’s varieties of delicious simple syrups featuring an array of fruit and agave flavors.
- Nothing goes together like mezcal and beans and the Rancho Gordo Holiday Gift Box is the perfect gift for anyone who loves both!
- This year at our San Francisco event, Otra Restaurant knocked it out of the ballpark with their salsa macha deviled eggs. The salsa was from Chingonas and we were so excited to learn not only is it for sale, but they also ship so now everyone can see why we went gaga over it.
- This year we were sad that Proyecto Diaz Coffee was not able to participate in our California events, though for the best reason – they are opening a a brick and mortar cafe in Oakland. The Diaz family has been growing coffee in the hills of Oaxaca since the early 19th Century and it is delicious. Not only does the Sampler Pack make for a great gift, but so does their instant Cafe de Olla kit.
- There is no better way for a person to announce their love of mezcal than with the Tuyo Quiero Mas Mezcal shirt. A simple message on super soft organic cotton.
The Mezcal Experiences
Looking for a completely different kind of gift, something hands-on or different from the usual? Mezcalistas does private tastings – virtual or in person where possible. These can be as casual or formal as you want and are great for mezcal novices or aficionados. Reach out to info@mezcalistas.com for more details.
If you want to create an experience on your own, check out our DIY mezcal tasting guides for ideas. Not only do they include mezcal suggestions but also what you can pair with them for a full tasting experience.
And finally, for the ultimate gift of mezcal love, mezcal balls are perfect. These are an agave take on the southern classic bourbon balls. Super easy and super delicious. Check out our recipe here.
